  • Condition: This powder horn is in as found vintage condition, and exhibits some period wear. It is missing the end piece or base, which would cover the large opening to serve as a barrier for the powder, and the pins which were used to keep it in place. There is a small area of the horn missing on the back from when the base detached. Located near the large opening of the horn are small holes, which were where the pins were originally located. There is some slight cracking in areas of the horn, please see the pictures provided. Overall it is in good vintage condition; it is missing the base, but still maintains and displays the handcrafted image well.     WWI Water Buffalo Powder Horn With Scrimshaw of Fort McKinley, Trench Art With Stand
    For your consideration, fresh to the market in as found condition, is this handsomely scrimshawed Water Buffalo Powder Horn from Fort McKinley, which is in the Philippines and was operated by the United States between 1901 to 1946. The horn features very detailed engravings of the fort, realistic foliage, and the name if
    the
    fort itself below. The horn itself probably predates the trench art by several years, and was originally utilized in the Philippines in the late 1800's before it was scrimshawed. It is was skillfully decorated and has an immense amount of detail. It is an excellent example of Trench Art. Trench Art is defined by an decorative item created by a soldier, prisoners of war, or civilians where the manufacture is directly linked to armed conflict or its
    consequences. Please see the pictures provided to witness the amount of intricate workmanship on the horn. This powder horn would display well with period U.S. Military items from World War I & World War II and would be a rare addition to your collection.
