WWI US Navy Airship / Blimp Helmsman's Sea Bag and Working ShirtProduct Description
ARTIFACT:
This is a 2 piece grouping of a United States Navy Airship / Blimp Helmsman’s Sea Bag and working Blouse / Shirt / Top from World War I. It belonged to Edmund J. Schumacher of the U.S. Naval Flying Corps, whose name is in evidence in several places on the bag and who is also most likely the one responsible for the hand-inked artwork of ship’s wheels and wings. The Navy Blue Top is a simple wool piece with just the “Airship Rigger” rate on the sleeve for quick ID as an Aerial Helmsman. The shirt was quite possibly worn by another sailor originally as remnants of what appears to be the name “A. CERMAX” look to be printed inside.
