WWI Field COMPASS, US Army issued, 1918, Military Engineering Dept., true vintage. This field compass has been in our attic for decades and decades. We are uncertain if our great grandfather owned this or picked it up while in the battle fields of Europe, where he served during WWI. What we do know is that this compass still works! The case is made of brass, which still has a nice patina for being
ONE HUNDRED AND THREE YEARS OLD!!!
The case doesn’t have any dents or scratches. It is engraved well and easily read (see pix). We did NOT polish up the brass nor clean it, having heard that this practice lowers the value. The button on top still works and is used to open and close the case. Inside, the glass comes to you without scratches. It is firmly attached as it probably was all those years ago. There is one tiny “something” that appears to be under the glass. The needle has a touch of rust. Perhaps that is the “something”…a speck of rust from the needle???? We are thinking that the needle was made of a cheap metal of some sort. This compass was made by Taylor and USANITE. It is a true antique…authentic, original, vintage and historical.
