The size and morphology of the tail vertebra indicates that this dinosaur was a huge carnivorous critter. It was a T-rex sized sail-back theropod that lived during the Cretaceous Period on the coastal plains of what is now North Africa.
Meaning “spiny lizard” got its name because it had a series of large neural spines up to 6 feet long protruding out of its back vertebrae, probably forming a sail-like fin. Spinosaurus was bipedal (it walked on two legs). It was about 40-50 feet long and weighed four tons or more; it is the largest known carnosaur (a type of meat-eating dinosaur). It had a large head with sharp straight non-serrated teeth (as seen in photos above) in a powerful crocodile-like lower jaw. It’s arms were smaller than it’s legs. This SPINOSAURUS fossil was found in the Sahara Desert in Morocco, and dates back to the early Cretaceous period about 145-65 million years ago.
