    Description
    ?This is an ORIGINAL example of the knife issued to Doughboys during WWI for use with their mess kits in the field.  The knife is in VERY GOOD+ condition with an aluminum handle and non-stainless steel blade, which shows minor tarnishing. The obverse side of the handle has a molded "U.S." and "R.I.A." (Rock Island Arsenal) and a 1917 date of manufacture. The Rock Island Arsenal was the Army's primary, if not sole, manufacturer of utensils in the WWI era, when the Army was very small.  After America's entry into WWI, Landers, Frary & Clark and Aerial Cutlery Company, among others, received contracts for the manufacture of eating utensils and the Rock Island Arsenal shifted to other implements of war.
    Here is an opportunity for the Punitive Expedition or WWI collector or re-enactor to obtain an increasingly rare mess utensil for the collection or field impression.  The buyer will have my usual unconditional guarantee of authenticity and satisfaction and a five-day (
