    Description

Boer War, Mounted Infantry, brass match box holder with 4 1/4" diameter base and 4 1/4" in overall height. White metal structure.  The front of the holder is inscribed to J.S. Marks, Mounted Infantry, 1901-1903. The insignia above the inscription is a gate with chains on either side, a scroll above inscribed South Africa 1900-1903. King's Crown above.  The reverse side is plain. The match box was inserted between the two uprights and the rectangular box on the inside forced the match box up thus exposing the matches. I tried to locate J.S. Marks on the rolls but came up with nothing definitive.
