    Description

WELCOME TO MY AUCTION, GOOD LUCK ON YOUR BIDS!
This came out of a house renovation in Kansas City many years ago, and back then it was attributed to a Black WWI soldier.
    Interestingly, it has a
steel lid, which were only found on the French made M1918 mess kits.
So we have an M1910 aluminum mess kit dated 1918 and then mated with a French made steel lid.
As such, the arm just barely closes, (see last photo).
The spoon is unit marked "814".
This could indicate this mess kit belonged to a Black soldier serving in the 814th Pioneer Infantry Regiment or "Black Devils".
Many Black troops were attached to French Troops so the lid switch makes sense.
All items show wear and use; there is someone's name scratched on the lid I can not make out (great research project); the utensils are dated 1917 and 1918.
    Used condition.
