Description
This is a real Dinosaur egg half that hatched before being covered with sediments. Laid by either a Maiasaura* or Titanosaur. Maiasaura are more like duckbilled dinosaurs, this specimen is most likely what the egg was laid by. But the other possibility is that the egg was laid by a Titanosaur which is a long necked dinosaur. But based off the scientific papers I've read, most researchers suspect Maiasaura based off the location and formation.Fossil eggs have their own scientific name to help scientists distinguish between the various styles of fossil eggs. Generally it is only speculative as to which egg belonged to which species. The exception is when scientists discover the remains of a fossilized embryo (which is very rare) still remaining within the egg shells.
• Dendroolithus (scientific egg name)
• Time Period: Upper Cretaceous
• Nanxiong Formation
• city of Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, southern China
~ 451 grams
~ 102 x 86 x 43 mm
I did not find this fossil, I purchased this specimen and did my own research to ensure it wasn't fake (most the market is full of fakes). The specimen has not been cleaned and is still heavily covered in a hard mudstone/matrix. I am confident this is NOT a composite egg.
Please examine all photos to determine condition, I have taken pictures in both indoor lights (black background) and outside in the evening sunlight.
