Halisaurus Arambourgi Skull from Morocco, Late Cretaceous
Halisaurus Arambourgi is an extinct genus of marine lizard belonging to the mosasaur family. This species is the smallest identified mosasaur species from the Maastrichtian phosphatic series of the Oulad Abdoun Basin of Morocco. Stratigraphically, the mosasaurid remains described occur in the upper Couche III, which is Late Maastrichtian in age (late cretaceous period: 73 - 65 million years ago).
Halisaurus, meaning “Ocean Lizard” was a powerful swimmer who spent its entire life in the sea, they had a long and powerful body whose tails and limbs were adapted for swimming.  They probably swam by moving their long body in a snake-like way.
Halisaurus had double-hinged jaws and flexible skulls, like those of modern snakes, which enabled them to swallow down their prey almost whole. They ate large fish, ammonites and sharks.
