    Description

1875 Liberty Seated Twenty Cent Piece ANACS Cert VF-35, “double-S” variety, MPD-002.
Here is a choice little 20-cent piece waiting to be welcomed into your collection in time for her 150th birthday.  The ANACS has graded this one “VF 35,” which is well-waranted by the strong "LIBERTY" on the shield.  The certificate  also says it is an S/S variety.  That is an error in which the “S” mintmark appears twice, slightly differently aligned, which is a bit rarer than the ordinary “S” for “San Francisco” issue.  Sadly, the mintmark on this coin is a bit worn, so the “double S” is not as apparent as it might be.  I have included a close-up photograph of the mintmark so you can see for yourself.  In addition, the ANACS has called it an "MPD-002," which I believe means “misplaced date.”  I admit I am not sure how the date on this coin is "misplaced," but I think it has something to do with an extra bit of curved metal in the denticles below the “8”.  The Red Book does not list a value for a VF-35 grade, much less the errors that bump up the value a bit, but the listing for a standard variety VF 20 is 5. The Grey Sheet lists a wholesale price for a VF 30 at 8.  The recent eBay sales that I have found for comparable coins without the “double S” have clustered mostly in the range of 0 to 0.  I will start the bidding on this nice certified example with all the bells and whistles at just 4.95, so that you have a clear shot at a great deal.  Our lot no 449
